[Review] Scooby-Doo: Escape from the Haunted Mansion

Long, long time ago, we sat on the weekend early in the morning in front of the TV in our pajamas. One of our favorite cartoons at the time was Scooby-Doo. The Great Dane Scooby-Doo, which solved mysterious events and supernatural phenomena with four friends.

That sounds like a perfect setting for an Escape Room game. That’s why we couldn’t resist bringing Escape Room game Scooby-Doo: Escape from the Haunted Mansion to the table and reminiscing about childhood memories. Read our review here.

Scooby-Doo: Escape from the Haunted Mansionis a cooperative adventure / escape room game for 2-5 players and a playtime up to 4h.

Scooby-Doo: Escape from the Haunted Mansion takes us straight to an episode of Scooby-Doo. Thus, we have a car breakdown with the famous Mystery Inc. van and when we look for help, we naturally end up in a haunted mansion with Scooby, Shaggy, Daphne, Fred and Velma. This is said to be haunted by the ghost of the deceased Lady Fairmont. However, the house inhabitants also seem to have one or two secrets.

How does Scooby-Doo: Escape from the Haunted Mansion work?

The game box contains various house cards (which always represent different rooms), various envelopes (which are opened during the course of the game) and, of course, a game piece for each of the Mystery Inc. members.

At the beginning, the players decide on one or more game pieces and each receives an adventure booklet.

In terms of gameplay, the game is reminiscent of the adventure games from Kosmos with the addition of typical Escape Room puzzles. Little by little, we explore the rooms with our game characters and combine printed numbers on these room cards with Scooby and Co. 

The highlight of the whole thing is that each Mystery Inc. character has a special ability and can thus trigger special events. Thus, not surprisingly, Scooby has the ability to smell very well; Shaggy, as always, is hungry and likes to taste everything that comes under his fingers. Fred is the one who is best at investigating objects. Daphne can use objects and Velma can research them.

The Scooby Doo Feeling

Thus, it is necessary to explore the places and objects with the different characters and read the result in the character’s corresponding adventure booklet. The game thus develops a really nice dynamic and the well-written texts do the rest to immerse us completely in the story. The characters’ texts are written appropriately for the characters and let us participate in funny dialogues as well as reminisce. Scooby-Doo: Escape from the Haunted Mansion hits the right tone at all times and leaves no doubt about playing a Scooby-Doo adventure.

Here, the experience is clearly in the spotlight and the puzzles support the story. You won’t find any real head-scratchers here. Which is completely fine, because the harder the puzzles, the more you would be torn out of this really well-rounded story in the end. However, a varied range is offered here.

During the game, various envelopes are also opened, which hold one or two surprises.

As in an episode of Scooby-Doo, the main focus is to figure out the mystery behind the ghost of Lady Fairmont at the end.

FAZIT – Gimme more!

Scooby-Doo: Escape from the Haunted Mansion offers an all-around successful gaming experience. Even players who may not have known Scooby-Doo before will hardly be able to resist the charm of Mystery Inc. The story could directly serve as a template for a Scooby-Doo episode. 

Another great power of the game is that really everyone at the table is involved. Since one or more characters can be played by one person, something new can always be discovered. Therefore, no one just sits at the table and has the feeling of contributing nothing. Everyone is part of the Scooby Gang. Once part of the story, always part of the story.

We promise you: You’ll end up watching an episode of Scooby-Doo on YouTube or a streaming service of your choice to finish off the evening. Hopefully there will be a sequel.
